Goojur Waterfall

Увс аймаг, Ховд сум

Overview

In the heart of the Olon Nuur mountains, southwest of the Kharkhiraa Turgeni mountains in the Uvs province, lies a hidden gem - the magnificent Goojur waterfall. Cascading down from a height of 17 meters, the waterfall is a sight to behold, with its crystal-clear waters glistening in the sun. Known to the locals as Huren Hanang Falls, the Goojur waterfall is situated on the eastern tributary of the Shiver River, which flows into the Goojur River.

Surrounded by majestic rocks and towering peaks that rise up to 3,000 meters above sea level, the Olon Nuur mountains are a paradise for nature lovers. The area is home to rare wildlife such as the elusive leopard, ibex, and deer, along with over 20 species of animals and more than 30 species of plants. With 108 large and small lakes scattered throughout the region, it is no wonder why the Olon Nuur mountains are also known as the Mountains of Many Lakes.

However, the Goojur waterfall is not just a beautiful sight to behold - it is also steeped in local lore and legend. According to legend, the waterfall was created by a beautiful maiden who wept tears of sorrow after her lover was killed by a rival tribe. Her tears flowed down the mountain, creating the Goojur waterfall, which stands as a testament to the power of love and the enduring spirit of the Mongolian people.

Despite its stunning beauty and significance, the waterfall has seen a decrease in water flow in recent years, making it all the more important to visit and appreciate this natural wonder while it still stands. And if you're lucky, you may even spot the rare Vansemberoo flower, which blooms in the area surrounding the waterfall.
