Elsen Tasarkhai

Tuv province-Erdenesant soum, Uvurkhangai province-Burd soum, Bulgan province -Gurvanbulag soum

Overview

Elsen Tasarkhai is a natural beauty spot that is a must-stop for domestic and foreign tourists visiting the Western Provinces.

The Elsen Tasarkhai is a sand dune about 80 kilometers long, starting from the west side of Bathaan Mountain and extending to the west side of Khogne Khan Mountain across the areas of Erdenesant in Central Province, Burd in Uvorkhangai Province, and Gurvanbulag in Bulgan Province. The road to the western provinces crosses this sand dune river, the front part is called Mongolian sand, and the northern part is called Khogne tarn sand.

Bushy plants such as willow, elm, and yarrow grow in the moisture of the sand settled by the influence of the Tarn River. On the north side is the Hadat mountain called Hogne Khan, and on the south side is the mountain that marks the navel point of Mongolia called Great Mongolia. The migration of the Great Mongolian Sand is relatively small because it is partially "protected" by vegetation, but in recent years, it has been used as livestock pasture and has become overburdened.

Within the Western Provinces of Mongolia lies a natural wonder that beckons to adventurers and nature lovers alike: Elsen Tasarkhai. Stretching over 80 kilometers from the foot of Bathaan Mountain to the west side of Khogne Khan Mountain, this sand dune river is a must-see for anyone exploring the region. As you traverse the dune, you'll see the Mongolian sand in the front and the Khogne tarn sand to the north, separated by the Tarn River.

Despite the arid environment, the area is teeming with life, with willow, elm, and yarrow bushes thriving in the moisture of the sand. The majestic Hadat Mountain looms on the northern side, while the Great Mongolia Mountain marks the southern end.

As a protected area, the migration of sand is relatively limited. However, recent overuse as a livestock pasture has begun to take a toll on this precious landscape. So come and experience the magic of Elsen Tasarkhai before it's too late!
