Terkh Lake
Arkhangai province, Tariat soum
Overview
Located within the stunning terrain of the Tariat Sum area in Arkhangai province, lies an incredible natural wonder that has earned its place as one of the world's must-see destinations. Known as Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake, this mesmerizing freshwater lake was formed by the flow of the Terkhi River, which originates from the Khangai mountain range and was blocked by the hot molten material from the Khorgo volcano. With an impressive length of 16 kilometers and a width of 6 kilometers, this vast body of water boasts an area of 61 square kilometers and a depth of 20 meters, standing majestically at an altitude of 2060 meters above sea level.
The lake is a true natural wonder, fed by more than 10 rivers, with the Terkhi River being the largest, and only one river flows out - the Suman River - which travels for about 50 kilometers and meets with the Chuluut River. At the center of the lake lies a small island, where birds build their nests and lay their eggs, adding to the charm of this already stunning location. Black geese are also a common sight here, diving to depths of up to 5 meters to feast on the lake's fish. In recognition of its unparalleled beauty, Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake was named one of CNN's top travel destinations in 2011, cementing its reputation as a must-visit destination for any adventurer.
